Commonwealth champion Lenn Hypolite will lead T&T’s four-member contingent at the Pan American Games qualifiers in Lima, Peru, this weekend. Hypolite won this country’s first ever medal at the Commomwealth Games when he captured the welterweight division in Chenai, India, in January getting the better of Dale Rhodie of Scotland 3-1. Caribbean champion Katherine Lee Aping, Central American and Caribeban (CAC) Games medallist Dorian Alexander and Japan-based Edson Breedy will complete the line up for T&T. Hypolite trains at the Westside Taekwondo Club in New York under the guidance of T&T’s Pan American Games bronze medallist Dr Chinedum Osuji .

The City University student is the 2008 Pan American championships silver medallist and will compete in the welterweight division. Lee Aping captured the junior women’s title at the Caribbean championships in Barbados in January. The St Joseph Convent, Port-of-Spain, fifth-form student also won the Best Female Fighter award. Alexander will compete in the featherweight division and is the reigning Central American and Caribbean Games bronze medallist. The 26-year-old medical doctor is a training partner of Hypolite at the Westside Taekwondo Club. Heavyweight Breedy spent a year working and training in Japan where he won several fights over in Asia.Colin Mufford and Dr Osuji are the two team coaches, while Anthony Ferguson is the manager.
